🙂 I tasted Bobal in a wine at a Grand Tasting ( 40+ wines) at my local wine shop and unfortunately didn’t like it so I never wrote down the name of the wine. I recommend  learning from my mistake 😦 and write down wines you don’t like but note what you didn’t like about that wine. Failure gives us as much insight as success (in both life and wine). I thought the wine was too acidic, tannins were too heavy for me and the wine not well-balanced. I’d recommend trying Bobal in a wine where its blended with a more glamorous grape varietal, like Merlot. Try a traditional food pairing like paella or char-grilled steak.

Here’s a 9 minute YouTube video by The Wine Brothers on Valencia and surrounding areas. If 9 minutes is too long, you’ll get a good overview of Bobal in the first 3 minutes and a good wine recommendation of Bobal blended with Merlot.

Bobal is a red grape used in winemaking. It is native to the region of Utiel-Requena, west of Valencia, Spain. This region is an area famed for Bobal and also Cava. Although Requena is one of Spain’s important Cava producers, Bobal is not an approved variety for Cava.

Bobal is one of Spain’s most planted grape varieties behind Tempranillo and Airén. Bobal grapes are often used as a minor blending partner to the region’s more glamorous grape varieties. The wines are dense and chewy with characters of chocolate and dried berries. The wines tend to be fruity, low in alcohol content and high in acidity. In addition, the high levels of acidity in the grape make Bobal versatile and Bobal has been used to make deeply colored rosé wines. There is a newfound commitment to quality and many producers are trying to elevate Utiel-Requena and Bobal to new heights.

The must is high in colorants and tannins, has higher than average quantities of resveratrol, and is suitable both for aging and for coupage with other varietals. In the world of wine, coupage refers to a blending wine or a cutting wine used to change the taste or color of the primary grape. Must is defined as freshly pressed fruit juice (usually grape juice) that contains the skins, seeds, and stems of the fruit. The Mayo Clinic writes resveratrol might be a key ingredient in red wine that helps prevent damage to blood vessels, reduces low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol) and prevents blood clots.

Grape growing is a driving economic force in Utiel-Requena, and archaeological finds show viticulture dates back to at least the 7th Century BC. In 1BC, Ancient Romans settled there and introduced improved winemaking techniques. Outside Spain, Bobal is grown in small amounts in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France and the Italian island of Sardinia, where it is known as Bovale or Nieddera.

The vine is vigorous and highly productive, has a natural semi-erect posture, with long, strong, trailing shoots, which makes it a difficult vine to work in the summer. The shoots often completely cover the ground thus helping to conserve moisture during the hot summers. It adapts well to all types of vine formation but is most commonly grown as a low bush and less often on trellises. It is perfect for the local climate and is resistant to extremes of weather and diseases. Frosts are a hazard here and they can persist into April and May. Bobal grapes bud late and so avoids most of the dangerous frosts. It thrives in the heat, temperatures can soar to well over 100 degrees in the summer in Valencia.

Here’s what http://www.wineawesomeness.com has to say:

“Bobal is a little known variety that hails from the Valencia region of Spain and typically has a personality one could compare with a jet-black Aston Martin Vanquish. It is sexy and sleek, but not without tons of horsepower and with this Bobal blend, ‘Mestis’, from Bodegas Mustiguillo you have exactly that. Flavors and aromas on this wine are dominated by black currant and blackberry with French oak tones of coffee, vanilla and dark chocolate. Structurally, the wine is as muscular as a triple reinforced steel chassis. You can nearly smell the hand-stitched, custom black leather interior in this wine. Essentially what we have here, is the kind of wine James Bond or Thomas Crown would drink at a beach grill out. He’s manning the grill with one arm and has a beautiful eastern European model on the other.”
